Republicans

In
Eddie Andrews, a minister and state representative from the 43rd district (2021–present)
Randy Feenstra, U.S. representative from Iowa’s 4th congressional district (2021–present)
Brad Sherman, a pastor and former state representative from the 91st district (2023–2025)

Andrews and Sherman both have conservative records in the state legislature. However, they lack the name recognition and money of Randy Feenstra, leaving the U.S. congressman as the likely current frontrunner.
Out
Kim Reynolds, the governor since 2017 has stated she will not seek re-election in 2026.
Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who represents Warren County residents in the U.S. House, has committed to seeking re-election in District 1.
Brenna Bird was seen by many as the possible “Trumpist” candidate. However, Bird said she will instead seek re-election as Iowa Attorney General.
Chris Cournoyer, the current lieutenant governor of Iowa (2024–present), is running for state auditor.
Zach Nunn, U.S. congressman from District 3, was a possible candidate for governor. However, a post by President Trump on X indicates that Nunn will instead seek re-election to help preserve the Republican majority in the U.S. House.

Maybe
Bob Vander Plaats, CEO of The Family Leader, has been suggested by some as a more conservative candidate for governor.
Mike Bousselot, a state senator from the 21st district (2023–present), has formed an exploratory committee.
Democrats
In
Paul Dahl, bus driver and perennial candidate
Rob Sand, the Iowa Auditor of State (2019–present) is currently the only Democrat to hold statewide office in Iowa and is the clear frontrunner in the Democratic primary.
Julie Stauch, business development professional and former Iowa political director for the Pete Buttigieg 2020 presidential campaign
Sondra Wilson, PAC founder
The Iowa Democratic Party is in desperate need of a win and seems to be rallying behind Rob Sand.

The race of governor of Iowa is just beginning. Iowa voters have the opportunity to examine these and other candidates and then make their decision in 2026.
