Why do we have a new lieutenant governor?

Back in September, Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg resigned from his office, citing personal reasons.

Who is Chris Cournoyer?

Chris Cournoyer was a state senator from Le Claire and is now the 48th lieutenant governor of the state of Iowa.

What does the lieutenant governor do?

According to the Iowa legislature,

The role of Lieutenant Governor is not statutorily defined in the Iowa Code; under the Iowa Constitution, the Lieutenant Governor of Iowa performs those duties assigned to the Lieutenant Governor by the Governor.

In Iowa, the lieutenant governor is largely ceremonial. In the event that Gov. Reynolds leaves office prior to the end of her term, Cournoyer would succeed her as governor.

How long will Chris Cournoyer be lieutenant governor?

Assuming that Gov. Reynolds runs for re-election in 2026, Lt. Gov. Cournoyer would be on her ticket.

Is Cournoyer a real conservative?

Conservatives have mixed reactions to Cournoyer’s appointment. She has supported pro-life legislation. However, she has also expressed support for LGBTQ+ rhetoric.

Is this the first time both Iowa’s governor and lieutenant governor have been women?

Yes.

I honestly have to question Governor Reynolds choice of this Lieutenant Governor as it appears that this particular person is not a Conservative according to my definition of the word Conservative. Cournoyer appears to have ideals that are not, in my judgement, Conservative enough if she were to become Governor. I am asking myself if this woman will be up to the task to work towards the agenda I myself expect from the Governor of Iowa. I suppose since this is Governor Reynolds’ choice, I will have to see what Cournoyer does if she ever is in the position of taking Reynold’s position as Governor. In the mean time, with the next election, I would have to seriously consider if I want to vote for Governor Reynolds with Cournoyer on the same ticket. “Time will tell”, for me.
