I recently talked with Adam Steen, a Republican candidate for governor of Iowa. We discussed his policy position and core values. But before that, he shared how his personal commitment to Christ motivated him to run for governor.

Adam Steen claims Indianola as where he grew up, having graduated from Indianola High School. After going to college in Minnesota and being drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies, he thought he knew how his life would turn out. But he was wrong.
After being cut from the team, Steen says “for six or seven years I lived my life very selfishly.” He found success in the business world but was left unsatisfied. “I wanted my world to be bigger,” he says. “I was lonely. I wasn’t living right. So 15 years ago, I hit my knees and recommitted my life to Christ. I felt my heart change…I knew I was going to live my life differently. I was going to live my life for others and not for myself.”

For Adam Steen, living life for others meant a call into leadership.
“I was motivated for higher levels of leadership for about 15 years.” Steen said. “When I recommitted my life to Christ, I had a complete worldview change and just a whole new perspective on how I was operating.”
This started out as just “being the best human and best leader that I could be.” Two years later, Adam married his wife Casey. They now have two sons. Steen says having a family, “really set me on the course of protecting and preserving their future.”
Adam Steen was recruited into the governor’s cabinet and has served for the last five years as the director of the Department of Administrative Services. Because of this role, he says, he “had an unbelievable perspective into the operations of politics.”
When Gov. Kim Reynolds announced that she would not seek re-election, Steen “knew that it was time for me to jump into the governor’s race and felt extremely well prepared.” He says, “It was the right moment to preserve and protect the culture of Iowa and preserve and protect the freedom that Iowa has.”
“Right now,” Steen said. “Iowa, I believe, is looking for a leader that’s willing to stand up for good; to stand up for what is right; to stand up for truth. And I feel I’m the right candidate to do that.”
