The Satanic Temple of Iowa requested permission to host an event at the Iowa State Capitol. Here’s what we know.

The event was originally planned to “commemorate” the one-year anniversary of the destruction of a pagan idol that the group had set up in the State Capitol in 2023. Officials have rejected the application.

Gov. Kim Reynolds said that the event violated the capitol building policies. She stated,
The Iowa State Capitol Complex is a place that is open to the public, where children and families routinely visit…Because of this, the state’s event policy takes into consideration conduct that would be harmful to minors. This satanic event, which specifically targets children, is harmful to minors and so it was denied.
Warren’s Voice obtained a copy of the Satanic Temple’s request. The request described the event this way:
TST Iowa’s holiday display will include an itinerary for the day with ritual, Krampus costumes, caroling, and other family-friendly activities such as coloring pages, and make and take ornaments. Everything will be family-friendly, and our display will be attended to by at least one member of our congregation at all times.
This collaborates the governor’s claim that the event would target children.
Last Christmas season, the Satanic Temple was allowed to present a Christmas display in the State Capitol, inciting national attention and outrage. A Mississippi man eventually destroyed the display.
The Satanic Temple of Iowa is an atheist group that parodies a Christian church to mock religion in general and Christianity in particular. They are not to be confused with “theistic Satanists” who actually seek to worship the devil.
As an anti-religion group, the Satanic Temple is not protected by freedom of religion. Though they have appealed to freedom of speech, the State Capitol Complex is allowed to set their own rules for who is allowed to use their space.
Update: The Satanic Temple is demanding that their event be rescheduled and is threatening legal action if the Iowa Department of Administrative Services does not comply.
