Here is what Patty Alexander, the Warren County chapter chair of Moms For Liberty said about the event,
On Saturday, August 16th, Brave Books and Moms For Liberty hosted a story hour for all ages. The stories to be read included stories about courage, kindness and perseverance. The guest reader was a Vietnam Veteran with 23 years of service to our Nation. Sergeant Mike Mettler humbly sat in front of about thirty people, adults and children reading the story Brave as a Lion by Kirk Cameron. The message was clear, even someone as small as a mouse can be as brave as a lion. Sergeant Mike explained that he was a paratrooper and his job was to jump from helicopters and airplanes to be boots on the ground in combat situations. He further went on to share the short stint of training beginning with jumping from a small hill to towers to airplanes. And the most courageous part was that Sergeant Mike had to do this at night. One little listener exclaimed, “I’m afwaid of the dawk!” Sergeant Mike admitted that his heart pounded and his knees shook every time he parachuted from the aircraft, but he knew his job.
It was an awesome family friendly event! Every family was able to take home two free books, donated by individual members of Moms for Liberty and Brave Books. Children left with handmade personal bookmarks and a little fuzzy book buddy which they constructed themselves. Some children even won a plush Squishmallow! Joy and gratitude was certainly in the air! We felt very thankful for the opportunity to give to others and the opportunity to bring the love of reading wholesome books to children. We were even grateful to the protesters who attended and were respectful, unlike the cussing that our friends at the Franklin Library, Des Moines, Iowa heard. Maybe next time, the librarian will post our event flyer on the community board in the main entrance of the library too! Maybe, the City of Indianola will allow their police chief and fire marshal to read a book instead of reconsidering their participation four days before the event. We’ll see you all at the library next year for another story hour with a story from Brave Books, building faith, family and freedom, one story, one library at a time!
A special thank you to Sergeant Michael Mettler and Representative Samantha Fett for helping with our event! To learn more about Brave Books you can go to bravebooks.us
