Last Sunday Before The Election

Today is the last Sunday before Election Day. It’s important to vote. But voting isn’t the only action that matters. For many Christians in Warren County, this will be the last time they attend church services before the election on November 5th.

The New Testament commends praying for those in government.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:1-4 ESV)

First Baptist Church, Providence, RI

The American version of The Book of Common Prayer includes a passage that has been used in Protestant churches around Election Day for over a century:

Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the election of officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to full your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Take a moment today, and ask God to do our work in our Union such that life, liberty, and true happiness may be preserved.

1 Timothy 2:1-7 (KJV) I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life of all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the eyes of God our Saviour; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

Putting scripture into context, these are the inspired words of Paul, formerly Saul of Tarsus, who was converted in a blinding light from heaven by none other than the ascended Lord himself. He was given a unique ministry and it is up to us to read the Pauline epistles and believe in the word of the Lord, rightly divided (see 2 Timothy 2:15, King James Version, the official Bible of the English speaking people, preserved unto this day by the perfect will of God.)

Psalm 150:6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.
