Everyday you are bombarded with headlines, all demanding to be taken very seriously. They command you to be very concerned about all the very important goings-on in the great halls of power. They tell you that significant events are happening in that far off land called Washington and that golden dome just north of here. But they’re wrong!
The media portrays the news as a kind of pyramid with the really important stuff happening on a global scale. A step down on this hierarchy is the national stage, with all its excitement and buzz. Far below that are state issues. This system dismisses county and local issues as the mundane world of potholes and property taxes. With so many important issues facing our nation and globe, what happens in a little county in Iowa seems quaint at best. Irrelevant at worst.
But what if they have the pyramid upside down? What if it’s the global, national, and state policies that are relatively unimportant when compared to what happens in your county and town? What if your county matters because you matter?
Warren County may not be the center of the universe. But it is the center of your universe. It’s where you live and work, love and laugh, marry and parent, worship and serve. It’s the place you call home.
Furthermore, this is the place where you have a real impact on policy. Here you can make a positive difference in the lives of your neighbors. In Warren County you play a role in changing the world. Your world.
This is why local elections matter!

With everything going on in the world, your local city council might not seem very important. It’s tempting to think that elections only matter when a president or (maybe) a governor is being elected. But this is simply not true.
The people elected on November 4 will have a direct impact on your life. The decisions they make can affect your taxes, your child’s education, the books you check out of the library, the streets you drive on, and a host of other issues that touch your daily life.
Americans have always believed that power should rise from the bottom up and not the top down. And it doesn’t get more “bottom up” than your city or county.
You matter. Your daily life matters. And so, the offices and issues that impact your daily life matter.
Make sure to vote by November 4. Change the world, one local election at a time.
